On Wednesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents initiated a series of raids at construction and landscaping sites in Wildwood, Florida. This operation instilled fear among the workers present. During these actions, ICE detained over two dozen undocumented immigrants, several of whom had previously been deported, as reported by various media outlets.

Official reports indicate that those arrested hail from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. The raids were conducted in collaboration with multiple federal and state agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), HSI Tampa, ERO Miami, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Authorities stated that these actions are part of a broader initiative to enhance monitoring of workplaces employing individuals without legal authorization.

News and videos of the arrests quickly went viral on social media. Activist Carlos Eduardo Espina shared several videos of the raids, criticizing these operations as they target vulnerable migrant workers. His posts received numerous comments, such as one from user mariluz1909, who remarked, "It's harsh, taking them away when they're just working."

Meanwhile, Barbie Rogers, a candidate for Congress in Florida's 11th district, confirmed via her official account that at least two dozen workers were detained in the area of The Villages, where many of the targeted sites are located.

These operations reignite the debate over Florida's immigration policies and those of the Trump administration, particularly concerning the presence of undocumented workers in essential economic sectors. Back in February, anti-immigration raids in Florida began impacting local businesses, which were struggling not only with a shortage of foreign workers but also with dwindling customer numbers.

In the southern part of the state, where Hispanics are vital to the service and tourism industries, the government's crackdown on illegal immigration led to a reduction in workforce presence, as employees chose to stay home to avoid the risk of deportation.

On Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis unveiled a controversial immigration proposal that would authorize the state's National Guard to act as a judicial authority in deportation processes and enable the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) to independently conduct immigration raids. The plan, submitted to President Trump's administration, includes utilizing the Judge Advocate General's Corps, a military justice branch of Florida's National Guard, as immigration judges to expedite legal proceedings.
