Family and friends of Yoendris Campos, a 33-year-old Cuban man tragically shot and killed this week in a Hialeah apartment complex, are reaching out for financial support to cover his funeral expenses. Through a GoFundMe campaign, those close to Campos are seeking to gather funds to provide him with "the burial he deserves," as stated in the post.
The campaign, led by Ana Vega, paints a picture of Yoendris as a hardworking, family-oriented man cherished by his community. In its description, it notes that friends affectionately called him "Gaspacho" and insists he was never involved in criminal activities. "He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time," the campaign laments.
"He left behind an entire family and friends who loved him dearly. Through this GoFundMe, we aim to help his mother bid him farewell with dignity," the campaign text continues.
The tragic incident occurred Tuesday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. at an apartment located in the 710 block of East 9th Street, near 7th Avenue. According to Hialeah Police reports, Campos was shot by a neighbor, Pedro Blanco, a 55-year-old who was apprehended at the scene and now faces first-degree murder charges.
Authorities explained that the assailant knocked on the door of an apartment where Campos was visiting. After receiving no response, he returned to his own apartment. When Campos eventually opened the door to see who had knocked, Blanco returned armed and shot him. "He was just visiting, they were going to fix a car. They knocked on the door and when he opened it, that man shot him," said his cousin Braulio, visibly shaken, in an interview with Telemundo 51. "He was the head of the family and had a young daughter in Cuba," Braulio added.
Campos, originally from El Vedado in Havana, emigrated to the United States seven years ago. The police have classified the event as an isolated incident.
