Shocking Crash on Havana's 5th Avenue

Wednesday, May 14, 2025 by Samantha Mendoza

A devastating traffic accident on Tuesday at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 170 in Playa, a municipality of Havana, has left both residents and passersby in shock. Witnesses reported that a black Hyundai Accent crashed violently into a palm tree, almost splitting in half, suggesting that it was traveling at a high speed.

Photos circulating on social media reveal the extent of the wreck. Users speculated that the driver might have lost control after one of the vehicle's tires blew out. An alternative account from an alleged witness proposes that the driver attempted an overtaking maneuver but collided with the curb, losing control of the car.

Although official information has yet to be released, many fear the driver may have died on the spot given the car's condition. A passenger in the front seat appeared severely injured in the images, but their survival is unknown. "Seeing that man holding the deceased's hand tightly as if saying, ‘I'm here, and everything will be fine,’ broke my heart," a social media user expressed emotionally.

Other Cubans have used this incident to emphasize the urgent need to adhere to speed limits, especially considering the poor condition of the country's roads. "An accident like this in the city center? We must respect speed limits!" wrote one user.

The Dangers of 5th Avenue

5th Avenue is classified as a major thoroughfare, with sections allowing speeds up to 80 km/h in the left lane. However, some segments are strictly regulated due to key intersections and pedestrian crossings, often monitored by police. The pavement's poor conditions and lack of proper signage lead many drivers to underestimate the risks of driving there. Some disregard speed limits, relying on traffic lights to manage flow, forgetting the presence of other drivers and pedestrians.

As of now, authorities have not issued an official statement about this tragic crash. Nevertheless, social media has been flooded with condolences: "Rest in peace," "Strength to the family," "God bless them," are some of the messages shared online.

Rising Fatalities Despite Fewer Accidents

In the first quarter of 2025, traffic accidents in Cuba decreased, yet fatalities rose compared to 2024. From January to March, 173 deaths were reported, up from 146 during the same period last year. The Minister of Transportation, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, pointed out that March was particularly dire, with fewer injuries (1,514) but the highest fatalities in provinces like Havana, Camagüey, and Ciego de Ávila.

The government blames these incidents on "human factors," overlooking structural causes like the poor state of the roads. A staggering 75% of Cuba's roads are in disrepair, further compromising road safety across the nation.
