Teen Sentenced to 15 Years for Tragic Accident Killing Three Cuban Women in Hialeah

Wednesday, May 14, 2025 by Richard Morales

Maykoll Santiesteban, a 16-year-old teenager, received a 15-year prison sentence along with an additional 15 years of probation on Tuesday for his role in a car accident that resulted in the deaths of three Cuban women from the same family in Hialeah, Florida.

The devastating incident unfolded on April 23, 2024, when Santiesteban, then 15, took his sister's car without her permission and drove it at speeds exceeding 80 mph in a residential neighborhood of Hialeah. Univisión journalist Javier Díaz reported that Santiesteban ignored a stop sign and collided violently with another vehicle, leading to the deaths of Yarina Castillo, Liliana Hernández, and Gloria Hernández, all of Cuban descent. Gloria succumbed to her injuries five months later.

After pleading guilty in February to eight charges, including vehicular homicide, Santiesteban remained in custody until his sentencing on Tuesday. The emotional hearing saw the young man break down in tears as his parents addressed the judge. “I apologize to everyone because this has been devastating for the family. He is a child who made mistakes, like any human being,” his father stated. His mother added, visibly moved, “We deeply regret the losses. It has been incredibly difficult for both families.”

Due to the large number of attendees, the hearing was moved to a larger courtroom. The prosecution presented compelling evidence of the accident, including the stop sign violation, and called on three Hialeah police officers and the victims' closest relatives to testify.

One of the most impactful testimonies came from Jocelyn Amanda Rivera, who stated, “It's about being responsible, taking responsibility. You have to make a decision every day, knowing the difference between right and wrong. It's crucial to choose the right path,” as reported by CBS News.

Despite sentencing guidelines suggesting a minimum of 29 years, the judge opted for a lesser sentence, taking into account the defendant's age. The time Santiesteban has already spent in custody will be deducted from his sentence.

The case has sparked intense reactions in the Hialeah community, which has a significant Cuban population, and has reignited discussions about the criminal responsibility of teenagers involved in tragic crimes.
