A 48-year-old Cuban woman marked Mother's Day in a unique way this year by graduating alongside her son from Miami Dade College. Haivyl López, originally from Matanzas and having moved to Miami in 2000, shared the graduation stage with her 20-year-old son, Sebastián Vera, on April 26, according to El Nuevo Herald.

López, hailing from Matanzas, expressed her excitement as she informed the professors on stage that her son would be following her during the graduation procession. At the age of 22, she and her husband left Cuba for Spain, just as she was about to complete a degree in Biology at the Juan Marinello Higher Pedagogical Institute.

"She’s spent more time in school than I have. I was extremely, extremely happy for her… incredibly proud of her," Sebastián remarked.

Upon arriving in Miami, Haivyl took on various jobs until she was hired as a teller at Colonial Bank after completing courses to improve her English skills. Over the years, she has advanced to become a vice president and wealth advisor at Truist Bank, where she manages high-net-worth clients in Florida.

Despite her achievements, Haivyl's journey was fraught with challenges. She faced a divorce, her son's brain surgery at 14, and the tragic passing of her ex-husband, who died in a cycling accident on the Rickenbacker Causeway in 2022. Nonetheless, she persevered, taking classes one semester at a time while raising her children and building a successful career. "I had to build a life, pay bills, and raise children while climbing the career ladder. But I never stopped attending classes," she shared with the Herald.

During a meeting about her remaining credits, her academic advisor, Jeanette Campos, realized that Sebastián was also just one class short of graduating. Haivyl earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management, specializing in Leadership and Management Innovation—aligning with her professional role. Meanwhile, her son graduated with an Associate degree in Finance from Miami Dade College and is set to continue his studies at Florida International University (FIU).

"I realized, wow, this woman has been working tirelessly her whole life. She hasn’t stopped in the 20 years I've known her," Sebastián added, who now manages the custom upholstery business his father left behind.
