Cuban's Return to the Island: A Journey Through U.S. Airport Security

Thursday, May 8, 2025 by Isabella Rojas

A Cuban residing in the United States made the decision to temporarily return to Cuba and documented his journey starting from an American airport just before boarding a flight to Havana. In a brief video testimonial, he shared insights into the airport procedures and the deep longing that drove him to go back.

"I'm heading back to Cuba for a while. What did I observe at the airport? A lot of merchandise, numerous suitcases, and increased supervision. There's more scrutiny now than before Trump was in office," remarked the Cuban, who chose to remain anonymous, withholding the specific reason for his trip.

From inside the bustling terminal, he explained that his choice was driven by a blend of emotional fatigue and a strong connection to his roots: "I'm going to Cuba because I'm tired of being here. I hope I won't face issues when I return, but I need to be in Cuba for some time. I love being in the neighborhood; I love being in Cuba."

His statement highlights a growing trend among some Cuban expatriates who, despite ongoing challenges in Cuba—such as inflation, food and medicine shortages, and frequent power outages—feel compelled to reconnect with their familial and cultural environment.

U.S. airports, especially those in cities with large Cuban populations like Miami, have tightened customs and security checks in recent years, particularly for flights bound for Cuba. This increased vigilance is also linked to the high volume of goods travelers often carry, including essential items, food, medicines, or appliances for relatives on the island.

This Cuban's temporary return occurs against a backdrop where over half a million islanders have emigrated in the past three years, driven by the severe economic crisis gripping the country and the restrictions imposed by the Havana regime.

Understanding Cuban Travel Challenges
