Two Motorbikes Crash in Busy Havana Intersection

Wednesday, May 7, 2025 by Ethan Navarro

This Tuesday, two motorbikes collided at the bustling crossroads of Vía Blanca and Lacret in the Diez de Octubre district, a heavily trafficked area in Havana. Photos shared by Alejandro Chassagne on the Facebook group "Traffic Accidents in Cuba" depict the motorcycles sprawled across the roadway, quickly drawing the attention of passersby and other drivers at the scene.

While an official report on the severity of the accident or the health status of those involved is yet to be released, the intensity of the crash points to potentially serious repercussions.

Public Reactions: “It Feels Like We Live Without Traffic Laws”

The images sparked a flurry of responses on social media, with users recounting similar traffic experiences in the area. One user commented, “I’ve seen drivers turn left from Vía Blanca onto Lacret, which is prohibited. It could easily have been that. It's like living in India, with no traffic laws or enforcement.”

Another individual shared, “Just a few days ago, I was leaving the Sports City and merging onto Lacret when a rider on an electric motorcycle unexpectedly turned left towards Vento, disrupting my path. There's no left turn there; it almost caused an accident.”

Many comments highlighted a recurring pattern of reckless behavior among motorcyclists, although they acknowledged that not all riders are at fault. “Most motorcyclists, mind you, most, not all, either ignore or are unaware of the traffic laws. They perform dangerous maneuvers on the streets, and sadly, they are often the ones who suffer the most due to the lack of protection beyond their helmets.”

Rising Trend in Motorcycle-Related Accidents

This incident adds to the increasing number of accidents involving motorbikes, particularly electric ones, in Cuba’s capital. The surge in motorcycle usage in recent years, combined with inadequate traffic education, poor signage, and limited enforcement at critical points, has created an increasingly hazardous environment for road users.

Between February and March alone, several motorcycle accidents were reported. One such incident in Arroyo Naranjo, Havana, involved two riders who were injured after crashing at the intersection of Calzada de Managua and Menocal Street. One sustained severe injuries due to a sewage leak that made the road slippery.

A more tragic accident occurred in Santiago de Cuba, where a motorbike and an e-bike collided at the intersection of Carretera del Morro and Calle 11, resulting in the deaths of three young individuals.

Additionally, in the capital’s Cotorro district, a police patrol collided with a car and two motorcycles, leaving two people seriously injured. In February, a young rider in Holguín died after crashing into a Transtur bus at the junction connecting the highway to Guantánamo and the bridge to El Jobo in Sagua de Tánamo.

Common factors in these accidents include reckless driving, poor road infrastructure, and a lack of traffic education among some drivers.
