Born on January 26, 1991, in Santiago de Cuba, Darián Cobas recalls being mesmerized at the age of five when he saw the Flying Man from Cirque du Soleil's 'Alegría' on Cuban television. This moment sparked his dreams. By age six, he embarked on a gymnastics career, which he pursued until he was 21. During this time, he became a champion in both junior and youth categories and joined the Cuban national team at 16. His interest in ballet and music eventually led him to the circus arts.
The Journey to Cirque du Soleil
In Cuba, Cobas participated in the Circuba Festival. Throughout his career, he has performed for the Budapest State Circus, Gandeys Circus in England, the Circus of Horrors, and Circo Probst, among others. His first contract with Cirque du Soleil came in 2019 with the show 'Totem'. In 2023, he rejoined the company for the spectacular 'Kurios'.
As a gymnast and personal trainer, Cobas recounts living and training in an abandoned cinema, the former Alegría Cinema on La Calzada de 10 de Octubre in Havana, to perfect his flying trapeze act. His dream of traveling to Europe and making a living from his passion was realized in 2015 when he arrived in Spain.
From Spain to the Global Stage
"Mission accomplished. I was able to showcase my skills in circuses and festivals across the continent," Cobas shares in an Instagram video. After settling in Valencia, he pursued a solo career and even participated in the talent competition 'Tú sí que sí'. A significant milestone was a special trip to Girona for Cirque du Soleil auditions in 2018, where he was selected to join the company. Months later, he traveled to Montreal for intensive training in makeup, acting, and dance. He then debuted in 'Totem' at The Hague, marking the fulfillment of his childhood dream to soar above a grand stage.
Currently, Darián Cobas is on tour and has promised an interview with CiberCuba once his schedule allows. From high above, he revels in his achievements. "Anything is possible when your determination drives you through even the toughest days," he asserts.
The Life of a Performer
Content to travel through Spain in a van with his "princess," Cobas often shares the rigorous training he undergoes to perfect his performances. He highlights the demanding nature of his work, beginning his makeup routine at noon and completing three shows by 11 PM. His grueling schedule includes warm-ups, weight checks, stretching, meditation, and tremendous effort.
Cobas proudly displays the home he has built and how he balances the demands of his career with family life. "As a child, I was fascinated by the idea of flying. I believed that with deep meditation and concentration, I could levitate. My greatest desires have been fulfilled, albeit not exactly as I imagined. Sometimes we overlook life's great gifts because they don't match our expectations," he reflects.
