For many Cubans living abroad, traveling back to Cuba poses a significant dilemma. While the longing to reconnect with loved ones is strong, the daunting expense of visiting the island cannot be ignored. Yanet Friol, an Italian resident known on social media as Alegría Cubana, addresses this issue candidly in a video on her Instagram account.
"People often say to me, 'You don't visit Cuba like you used to, and don't claim it's due to financial reasons because you're always seen online going out and dressed well,'" Friol shares. She acknowledges, "It's true, I don't visit Cuba as frequently as before because today's Cuba is not what it once was. Visiting now is almost a luxury. Depending on how you choose to travel, a Cuban abroad might need at least 5,000 euros just to make the trip, which is comparable to buying a car in these countries where you can get one for 2,000 euros."
Alegría emphasizes, "A typical Cuban planning to visit must set aside between 3,000 to 5,000 euros comfortably. If you have a large family, 3,000 euros won't suffice—you'd only end up burdening relatives who themselves are struggling."
Expressing her longing, she states, "Of course I want to see and embrace my family, but it's clear that visiting requires a substantial amount of money because Cuba has become very expensive. Dining out with family demands deep pockets since many restaurants charge as if you were still abroad."
She further reflects, "When Cubans first move overseas, their initial desire is to return to Cuba. However, they soon realize how limited their global exposure is. For 5,000 euros, a trip back home barely compares to a 1,000-euro vacation in Spain, which can include an all-inclusive hotel stay and fabulous experiences."
"Not every year do Cubans abroad have 5,000 euros to spare. We have numerous priorities and responsibilities. It's true we buy clothes and go out, but life here demands immense work and sacrifice. Behind the facade of appearances lies hard work, and we also yearn to explore because many of us never had the chance to even see our own provinces back in Cuba," she laments.
She concludes with a sentiment shared by many expatriates: "For all Cubans, returning to Cuba is stressful from the moment you arrive. It's a constant struggle to stay afloat amidst the financial demands."
