Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding in Low-Lying Areas of Ciego de Ávila

Monday, May 5, 2025 by Oscar Fernandez

In the city of Ciego de Ávila, flash floods have wreaked havoc in several neighborhoods following intense rainfall that struck this past Saturday afternoon. These heavy showers mark the beginning of the rainy season in this central province, which is expected to continue until October. This rain comes amidst a severe drought that has been impacting the region.

The downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms, overwhelmed urban areas with poor drainage systems, leading to rapid water accumulation in streets, yards, and home entrances. The Provincial Meteorological Center (CMP) of Ciego de Ávila shared images via Facebook showing waterlogged scenes in El Algarrobo and other parts of the provincial capital.

A user identified as Elizabeth SP commented on the Ciego de Ávila Información portal, noting, "Ciego de Ávila Street has been flooding for years because the sewers on Marcial Gómez and Abraham Delgado can't handle the flow." Meanwhile, residents also blame the problem on trash buildup. "These floods aren't just from the rain; they're due to blockages from all the garbage piling up on every corner from downtown to the neighborhoods," stated Rodalys Gómez.

Despite these challenges, some see the rain as a blessing. "Given the drought we're experiencing, a little rain now and then is welcome... we need it," remarked Yenisleidi Yeni.

The CMP had anticipated these conditions, warning of heavy rains for Saturday afternoon. Meteorological radar images confirmed significant convective activity in various areas of the province, including Morón. Authorities have advised avoiding flooded areas, staying indoors during thunderstorms, and refraining from drinking rainwater, as it may contain pollutants.

This was Ciego de Ávila's first major downpour of May, highlighting the need to address urban vulnerabilities to heavy rain. In addition, a severe local storm on the same Saturday caused damage to homes and the electrical grid in a town in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas.

May officially marks the start of Cuba's rainy season, and although the first day of the month saw sparse and isolated showers primarily in the country's extremities, experts predict a gradual increase in rainfall activity in the coming days. Meteorologist Raydel Ruisánchez, a weather presenter at Telecentro ARTV Artemisa, explained that this precipitation is due to a trough in the mid and upper atmosphere, increased relative humidity across much of the national territory, and daytime heating typical of this time of year.
