Mike Hammer, the head of the United States Mission in Cuba, engaged with independent journalists and civil society members in Camagüey this week. On Thursday, he visited Henry Constantín and Iris Mariño, journalists from La Hora de Cuba. On the U.S. Embassy’s X account, Hammer praised these journalists for their commitment to “inform the Cuban people and the world about events on the island, a challenging but essential task.”

That same day, he visited Alberto Reyes, a priest known for his criticism of the regime, in the Esmeralda municipality. Hammer commended Reyes for his efforts to uplift the lives of the needy and his vision for a brighter future for all Cubans.

On Friday, Hammer met with a group of local entrepreneurs. During his time in Camagüey, he even joined a group of young people for a game of dominoes on the street. “We visited Cuba Emprende in Camagüey and met an impressive and creative group of entrepreneurs. These young individuals are striving to make a living, much like their peers in the U.S. With limited resources, they are establishing businesses in cafes, toy stores, beauty products, and more. I was delighted to find that they share a love for cupcakes, just like in the United States. I wish them success!” he expressed.

These visits are part of a series of engagements initiated by Hammer since his arrival in Havana. He has held discussions with ordinary citizens, activists, and dissidents such as José Daniel Ferrer, Guillermo Fariñas, and Martha Beatriz Roque. “I want to speak with anyone who is willing to share their perspectives,” Hammer stated recently, underscoring the importance of directly hearing the Cuban people's voices.

Hammer's presence at notable sites like the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity and his willingness to engage in face-to-face dialogues with Cubans from various spheres have piqued the interest—and discomfort—of the Cuban regime. They have accused him of interfering in domestic affairs. Carlos Fernández de Cossío, the vice minister of foreign affairs, criticized Hammer for acting like “an activist encouraging Cubans to act against their country,” justifying repressive measures as defense against a “hostile foreign power.”
