Saturday, May 3, 2025 by Henry Cruz

A tragic incident shook the city of Bayamo in Granma on Friday when a 21-year-old Cuban named Jesús Bejerano, affectionately known as "Chu," was fatally stabbed in the Latinoamericano neighborhood, commonly referred to as Jabaquito. The community was not only stunned by the brutal act but also by the intense response from family and neighbors who, driven by grief, attempted to take justice into their own hands.

The altercation, which led to Bejerano's untimely death, reportedly arose from a "problem with another person," escalating into a deadly confrontation. The incident was shared by the Facebook group "Revolico Las Caobas Bayamo" through the "Portal del Ciudadano Granma" page.

According to Alex Torres, a user who posted about the incident, the alleged assailant was apprehended by the police and taken to the hospital. However, what should have been a routine procedure turned into a tense standoff as Bejerano's grieving relatives awaited the suspect's arrival at the healthcare facility, attempting to lynch him in their anguish.

"They threw themselves at the patrol car intending to lynch him because of their pain. The police had to act swiftly, requesting urgent backup and speeding away," Torres recounted on his profile, where he also shared a video of the patrol car hastily leaving the scene.

"May God have mercy on us due to the violence rampant on the streets of Bayamo today," he added. The murder has sparked a wave of outrage and concern in the eastern city, which has seen a rise in violent incidents, particularly among the youth, in recent months.

Violence Reflects Social Tensions

For many residents, the tragedy involving Jesús Bejerano highlights the climate of tension, frustration, and social neglect prevalent in neighborhoods like Jabaquito, where opportunities are scarce and conflicts are intensifying. Although authorities have not yet provided an official account or details about the alleged attacker, who remains in custody, community discussions suggest that Bejerano and the suspect were acquainted.

While the motive behind the crime—whether a pre-existing conflict, a vendetta, or a spontaneous act—remains unclear, social media comments from locals indicate that the two had prior interactions.

Community Calls for Justice

Amidst the anger and helplessness, friends and family of Jesús Bejerano have turned to social networks to pay tribute to him. The shared demand for justice and the hope that such tragedies will not occur again is a unifying sentiment among all. The rise in urban violence continues to be a pressing concern for many Cuban communities, and the events in Jabaquito serve as a stark reminder to authorities and society of the dangers of social decay and the urgent need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms.
