Yordenis Ugás Condemns May Day Marches in Cuba: "Millions of Accomplices"

Friday, May 2, 2025 by Olivia Torres

Exiled Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugás unleashed a scathing critique on Thursday against the May Day parade held at Havana's Plaza de la Revolución. He shared an image of the event along with a strong message condemning both the attendees and the system they continue to support through their participation. "Look at how May Day was today, 2025, and 66 years of the same system," Ugás wrote on his social media.

Despite the severe crisis currently engulfing Cuba—characterized by prolonged blackouts, and shortages of food, medicine, and fuel—thousands were mobilized across the island to participate in these official events orchestrated by the regime. According to government reports, over 5.3 million people attended nationwide, with 600,000 in the Cuban capital.

Ugás pointed out the contradiction, noting, "The majority of those present—60 or 70%—cry over the phone to family and friends about how bad things are while they receive top-ups, remittances, and food packages. Meanwhile, Cubans abroad are pulling their hair out trying to help." Now residing in the United States, Ugás has been a consistent critic of the Castro regime.

He emphasized that the issue extends beyond the ruling elite: "Raúl is just one, Díaz-Canel is just one... there are thousands and millions of accomplices, submissive slaves, opportunists who uphold that inefficient and sick tyranny."

Ugás lamented seeing his fellow Cubans celebrating and supporting the very system that oppresses them, expressing sorrow for those who, despite being aware of the harsh reality, continue to participate in marches that legitimize the regime and extend its control. His post sparked hundreds of reactions.

Filmmaker Lilo Vilaplana added a harsh comment: "It's disgraceful, the lack of dignity and complicity of these people with that system. I think of the political prisoners, the heroes and martyrs of the anti-communist struggle who have given everything for Cuba, and I see these traitors to the homeland groveling before their oppressors. Any self-respecting exile who recognizes a relative in that shameful line of cowards, DO NOT SEND THEM ANYTHING! Let them ask their masters. It's disgusting. They are pitiful."
