Florida Moves to Curb License Appointment Scalping

Saturday, May 3, 2025 by Elizabeth Alvarado

This past Wednesday, Florida's House of Representatives passed a law targeting the rampant practice of selling appointments for driver's license services. This legislation, a response to growing frustration and prolonged wait times among residents, now makes such activities a first-degree misdemeanor.

The statewide law builds on previous measures implemented in Miami-Dade County, where individuals caught reselling appointments faced fines up to $500. In March, the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector's Office exposed a network that had been monopolizing and reselling free appointments for obtaining driver's licenses, negatively impacting thousands of locals.

With the new regulation in place, people caught engaging in this illegal activity could face jail time. "Now it's a state law, with fines reaching up to $1,000 and potential imprisonment for up to a year," explained Dariel Fernández, Miami-Dade's Tax Collector. He has been at the forefront of efforts to tackle this issue and improve service accessibility at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Fernández has championed the deployment of a DMV mobile service unit, which enables residents to obtain or renew driver's licenses, replace stolen documents, and update their personal information without needing to visit central offices. This mobile unit will gradually cover the Miami-Dade area, focusing on assisting seniors and others with mobility challenges who require support.

This initiative aims to alleviate the backlog of appointments and reduce the long queues that have been prevalent in recent months, especially as the demand for obtaining the Real ID rises. The Real ID will become mandatory starting May 7th for domestic flights and access to federal facilities.

By combining this new law with the expansion of mobile services, Florida hopes to reduce wait times and ensure a more equitable and efficient access to services for all state residents.
