Viral Memes of May Day Parade in Cuba Spark Online Frenzy

Thursday, May 1, 2025 by Emily Vargas

The May Day parade in Cuba has sparked a wave of witty and sarcastic memes on social media this Thursday. Users not only mocked the event's striking scenes but also linked them to Cuba's dire economic situation, comparing the people to a herd of obedient sheep.

One of the most shared pieces of content was a video posted by @kiwito_cubano on Instagram, depicting a massive flock advancing, clearly alluding to the May Day parade. "I don’t know how they manage, dude..." commented the user, expressing disgust at how Cubans still attend the parade despite severe economic hardships, power outages, food shortages, and growing societal disillusionment.

Unintended Symbolism and Irony

Another viral video featured a leader calling on workers to join the May Day parade, inadvertently revealing a noticeable lack of teeth. This image, beyond its spontaneous nature, stirred reactions as it starkly contrasts with the official narrative portraying Cuba as a medical powerhouse. Edmundo Dantés Junior shared the clip on Facebook with biting irony: “I might go just because Cindy’s waiting to give us a spiel.”

The account Cardin.Ja, known for satirizing the Cuban regime online, joined the meme storm with an Instagram video mocking the official celebration. The post highlighted, “It’s not the same to watch the entire Labor Day parade as it is to watch those who struggle daily parade,” directly connecting with public discontent and the gap between triumphant rhetoric and everyday Cuban realities.

Social Media vs. State Propaganda

Another widely discussed moment was provided by the profile El Descoyuntado, which posted a meme featuring Sandro Castro and La Cintumbare participating in the parade, laden with sarcasm. Meanwhile, social media buzzes with mockery aimed at the official narrative, while state media and regime-affiliated profiles maintain their triumphant rhetoric intact.

Journalist Yosmany Mayeta also seized the occasion to critique the official stance. From his Facebook profile, he sarcastically commented on the supposed massiveness of the parade in the eastern part of the country, with the message: “Baracoa celebrates with a massive turnout of workers on May Day...,” accompanied by images showing a visibly sparse march. The photos highlighted a meager parade, where propaganda and reality seem to march, as always, in opposite directions.

Joining the throng of criticism was Cuban influencer Kenny Robert, known as "El Más Viral," who shared an Instagram video of a girl with an "enthusiastic" speech urging people to march on May Day. “This girl is possessed by an ancient revolutionary spirit,” joked the content creator. Official coverage emphasized a supposed unity of the working people, illustrated this year with a parade led by leader Miguel Díaz-Canel and his wife, Lis Cuesta, who is visible but not officially recognized as first lady.

The official images, marked by feigned enthusiasm and familiar banners, contrast sharply with the prevailing atmosphere of fatigue and resignation among much of the population. From the Facebook profile of the Holguín Electric Company, a post filled with official euphoria declared: “Charged with initiatives and full of enthusiasm, the workers of the Holguín Electric Company participate in the May Day parade, International Workers' Day.”

The accompanying images show employees waving banners like “History and Continuity,” perfectly aligning with the regime’s discourse. Ironically, continuity does seem guaranteed... at least in the ongoing power outages, as several users wittingly noted, not missing the double-edged nature of such a slogan.
