Heiler Daniel Díaz Masso, a student who suffered severe injuries last Sunday during a violent incident at the "Antonio Maceo" Vocational High School of Exact Sciences in Santiago de Cuba, is showing promising signs of recovery. Reporter Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, drawing on information from those close to the young man, confirmed that the 16-year-old from Chamarreta in San Luis Municipality is currently under medical care at the Dr. Antonio María Béguez César Southern Children's Hospital. He is recuperating from a skull fracture and kidney inflammation.

"He's drinking milk and juice, and he's improving. He has even asked to go home, but he still can't leave. They mentioned they would transfer him to a regular ward," a family member, who wished to remain anonymous, told Mayeta.

Despite his progress, Díaz Masso has not yet been discharged as he requires continued observation due to head injuries sustained while escaping from attackers at his dormitory. The incident occurred when Díaz Masso attempted to flee from intruders who stormed the student residence. In his escape bid, he fell from the second to the first floor, resulting in his severe injuries.

Cuban authorities stated that three young individuals have been arrested in connection with the violent episode. These individuals reportedly frequented the school's recreational area and entered a dormitory to assault students. On the day of the incident, they were present on campus, sitting in the park, when students poured water on them from the dormitory windows. This act allegedly triggered the confrontation.

In the chaos, Díaz Masso, a tenth-grade student, fell to the pavement, sustaining a skull fracture and kidney inflammation. Despite the unfortunate event, the Provincial Education Directorate announced that classes at the school are proceeding according to the academic calendar.

Multiple accounts of the incident suggest that the attackers used knives, though the government has not confirmed these reports. Authorities are investigating the matter to clarify the situation and intend to take legal action against those responsible. Concerns over school security, which had gone unaddressed despite past incidents, have also been raised.
