Immigrant Spends Over Eight Hours in a Tree to Evade ICE Arrest

Wednesday, April 30, 2025 by Daniel Colon

In a dramatic scene that captured the attention of an entire community, a 29-year-old Guatemalan immigrant spent more than eight hours perched atop a tree, attempting to avoid capture by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in San Antonio's West Side neighborhood, Texas. The incident took place on Monday, April 29, and was witnessed by federal agents, local residents, and media outlets.

The man, identified as Raúl Ical, was also known as Raymundo Caal-Caal according to official documents procured by Univision. Federal authorities revealed that the operation stemmed from an outstanding arrest warrant related to Ical's illegal entry into the United States and a prior deportation in 2013. Additionally, he was linked to a recent incident of driving under the influence in April 2024, for which he was released on bail but remained subject to a detainer order.

The Escape and Tree Climb

Reports indicate that the situation unfolded around 11:00 am when ICE agents, in coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), attempted to apprehend Ical following a traffic stop of the vehicle he was riding in as a passenger. Faced with the presence of the agents, Ical reportedly fled, entering a nearby home and, in a desperate bid to escape, climbed a tall tree where he stayed until nearly 7:00 pm.

During these tense hours, local residents, many of whom are from Latino immigrant backgrounds, gathered at the scene. They shouted messages of encouragement from below, such as "Don't come down, you have rights!", "We'll get you a lawyer!", and "Don't sign anything!", demonstrating solidarity. Some recorded videos and shared the event online.

Antonio Cruz, a young man of Honduran descent, told the press he felt compelled to offer support. "I don't know if he has papers or not, but he's a human being. It breaks my heart to see this," he expressed to EFE. According to Cruz, Ical managed to tell him from the treetop that he worked in construction and was simply on his way to work when he realized he was being followed.

Resolution and Arrest

Around 7:00 pm, after enduring hours under the sun and the pressure from authorities below, Ical peacefully climbed down from the tree. The moment was captured on video and swiftly circulated on social media. ICE agents promptly arrested him without any violent incidents reported.

Official statements indicate that the man will face federal charges due to his immigration history and unlawful reentries into the country. As of the close of this report, he remains in federal custody. The case has reignited discussions about immigration policies and the use of high-profile operations in vulnerable communities, especially those involving individuals with family and work ties in the U.S.

Meanwhile, immigrant support groups have reiterated their call to reassess the treatment of those who, regardless of legal status, are simply seeking a dignified and safe life.
