Cuban Airline Resumes Flights to Germany After Two Decades

Sunday, April 27, 2025 by Felix Ortiz

State-run airline Cubana de Aviación has announced the resumption of its regular flights between Cuba and Germany, marking the end of a suspension that lasted over 20 years. Starting in November 2025, the airline plans to operate two flights per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays, utilizing a modern Airbus A330-200 with a capacity for 287 passengers. This was reported on Facebook by Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Cuba's Minister of Transportation.

Rodríguez Dávila emphasized on social media that this renewed connection is aimed at enhancing the island's links with Europe and addressing the increasing international competition in the aviation market. "Cubana de Aviación is opening new horizons between Cuba and Germany," the Transportation Minister celebrated.

The announcement, however, comes at a challenging time for Cuban tourism. Official statistics from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicate that between January and March 2025, the country welcomed 759,641 international travelers, representing a 22.7% decline compared to the same period in 2024.

In absolute terms, the island saw a loss of 223,323 visitors compared to the previous year. This downturn is further underscored by figures from the Directorate of Identification, Immigration, and Foreign Affairs, which reports only 571,772 entries into the country, accounting for 70.7% of the total recorded in 2024. The Russian market, which has been one of Cuba's most significant in recent years, experienced a 49.9% drop in tourist numbers.

On social media, the news of the tourism decline has sparked sharp criticism from Cuban citizens, who point to the poor quality of services, scarcity of basic goods, and the requirement to pay in foreign currency as factors discouraging visitors. "What did you expect?" questioned one user, while others warned that "nobody wants to visit a country in ruins" and that "tourism will continue to decline."

Despite the challenging landscape, Cubana de Aviación remains committed to maintaining its international presence, improving its image, and solidifying strategic partnerships with airlines and tour operators. The company also reiterated its commitment to promoting Cuba as a safe, unique, and sustainable destination, although it fails to address the growing insecurity on the island and the systemic crisis.
