A municipal court in Contramaestre, Santiago de Cuba, has sentenced a worker to prison for stealing 35 mechanical components from the still-under-construction Las Guásimas photovoltaic park. During a public hearing held on Wednesday, attended by employees of the facility, the details of the theft, which occurred the previous Saturday, were laid bare.

The individual, employed as an assistant in the installation of solar panels, stole components including screws, nuts, and washers. This theft not only resulted in material losses but also posed a significant risk of halting work on a critical project for the region.

According to a report shared on Facebook by the Provincial Popular Court of Santiago de Cuba, the stolen items were found at the camp where the accused, along with other workers, was staying. Upon being apprehended by the police, he failed to produce his identification card and, in an attempt to evade responsibility, concealed his identity by providing his brother's name, leading to initial processing under the brother's details. However, the investigation eventually confirmed his true identity and guilt.

The court sentenced the individual to five years of imprisonment for the crimes of unlawful appropriation and disobedience. The ruling took into account his status as a repeat offender and the fact that he was on parole at the time. In addition to the main sentence, the verdict includes supplementary penalties such as the deprivation of rights and a travel ban from leaving the country.

The official statement further noted that due process was upheld and the accused's constitutional rights were respected, with the option available for him to appeal the decision.
