Ernesto Borges Pérez, a former officer of Cuban intelligence and recognized as one of the longest-held political prisoners under the regime, was released on Thursday, April 24, after enduring 28 years of severe imprisonment conditions. These harsh conditions have been condemned by human rights organizations.

According to Cuban activist Carolina Barrero, Borges' release occurred in the morning and marks "a victory of resistance against oppression." Borges, once a captain in the Directorate of Counterintelligence of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), was detained in 1998 for attempting to hand over a list of 26 intelligence agents to U.S. diplomats. These agents were intended by the Cuban government to infiltrate the United States and NATO countries.

Though Borges did not succeed in delivering the list, he was initially sentenced to death, a sentence later reduced to 30 years of imprisonment. During nearly three decades in captivity, Borges faced inhumane conditions, including dark, unventilated cells, inadequate medical care, and no physical contact with his daughter for over 20 years. His health continually declined, suffering from severe cataracts and an untreated inguinal hernia.

Inspiration for Current Officials

Barrero emphasized that Borges' story should inspire other officials within the MININT and repressive forces "to act with truth and courage against the tyranny that uses and despises them, just as it does the rest of the Cuban people for the benefit of the Castro family." His release has been met with relief and hope by his family, Cuban dissidents, and exiled community members.

"To Ernesto Borges and his family, I extend my respect and embrace. May his freedom be a prelude to a #FreeCuba," Barrero concluded.

Ongoing Concern for Political Prisoners

The plight of political prisoners in Cuba remains a persistent concern for international organizations. Borges' release adds to the growing demand for democratic change on the island, as dozens of prisoners of conscience still remain behind bars, particularly following the social upheaval on July 11, 2021.
