Trump Criticizes Zelenski Over Stance on Crimea's Russian Control

Thursday, April 24, 2025 by Edward Lopez

On Wednesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump openly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski for his recent refusal to acknowledge Russian control over Crimea as part of any potential peace agreement with Moscow. During a press briefing on Tuesday, Zelenski firmly stated that "Ukraine will not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea," emphasizing that there's "nothing to discuss" on the matter, as such recognition would violate the country's constitution.

In response, Trump took to his Truth Social platform (with the message also shared on his official account on X) to denounce Zelenski's statements as "very damaging to peace negotiations." He argued that "Crimea was lost years ago under the Barack Hussein Obama administration," downplaying the significance of including the peninsula in peace talks.

Trump further questioned, "Nobody is asking Zelenski to recognize Crimea as Russian territory, but if he wanted it so much, why didn't they defend it eleven years ago when it was handed over without firing a single shot?" He added, "Inflammatory statements like his make it so difficult to resolve this war."

The former president, who has expressed interest in mediating to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, warned that "the situation for Ukraine is critical," suggesting that Zelenski "can have peace or continue fighting for another three years before losing the entire country."

Trump distanced himself from any ties to Moscow but reiterated his focus on saving lives, saying, "I have nothing to do with Russia, but I am concerned with saving 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers every week who are dying for no reason."

He also maintained that the war would never have started if he had been in the White House, urging Zelenski to "finally understand and resolve it."

Meanwhile, Zelenski condemned Russia for continuing attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, despite commitments made by Vladimir Putin in a recent conversation with Trump. In light of this, the Ukrainian leader announced plans for an urgent discussion with his American counterpart to demand explanations and push for assurances of compliance.

Trump's stance stands in contrast to many Western leaders, who have insisted that any peaceful resolution must respect Ukraine's territorial integrity. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 was widely condemned by the international community.
