Havana Faces New Power Outage Schedule Amid Intensifying Energy Crisis

Wednesday, April 23, 2025 by Abigail Marquez

The severe energy crisis gripping Cuba has pushed Havana's Electrical Company to introduce a new schedule of power outages, labeled Block 5, in response to an increasingly strained power generation situation affecting the nation's capital. According to an official statement on the Havana Government's Facebook page, this new block will encompass areas within the municipalities of Boyeros, Arroyo Naranjo, La Lisa, Centro Habana, and Habana del Este.

"Further details regarding the circuits and sectors included in the new block will be provided through our official channels and accounts," the entity announced, urging residents to stay informed via social media or by calling the Customer Service Center at 18888.

Power Outage Schedule for Tuesday in Havana

Havana has been divided into five blocks, each experiencing scheduled power cuts throughout the day as follows:

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. → Block #5

11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. → Block #1

3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. → Block #2

6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. → Block #3

7:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. → Block #4

Cuba's Looming Electrical Collapse

The condition of the National Electroenergetic System (SEN) is deteriorating at a rapid pace. On Monday, the Cuban Electric Union (UNE) predicted a generation shortfall of up to 1,858 MW, surpassing the previous high recorded on February 12, when a 1,779 MW deficit was noted. However, the highest impact reported yesterday was 1,736 MW at 7:50 p.m., according to company data.

For Tuesday, system availability at 7:00 a.m. was just 1,480 MW, while demand exceeded 2,600 MW, resulting in an immediate shortfall of 1,147 MW. It is anticipated that by midday, outages will reach around 1,400 MW, a significantly high daytime number, with overall impact during peak evening hours potentially hitting 1,668 MW.

Ongoing Crisis with No Relief in Sight

The national electrical infrastructure, aging and heavily reliant on fossil fuels, remains susceptible to frequent breakdowns, resource shortages, and a lack of sustained investment. Despite efforts by the government to promote renewable energy sources and call for energy efficiency, the outcomes have been minimal against the backdrop of the system's structural collapse.

In the meantime, millions of Cubans continue to endure power outages as a daily reality: having dinner in darkness, sweltering nights without fans, disrupted work and school schedules, and an ever-growing sense of uncertainty with no apparent resolution on the horizon.

Understanding Cuba's Energy Shortage
