Amidst widespread power outages lasting up to 20 hours a day, Cubans have turned to charcoal as their primary cooking fuel. Yet, the government continues to export this essential resource from regions like Baracoa, Guantánamo. Recently, the Agroforestry and Coconut Company of Baracoa announced an assessment of the quality of charcoal intended for export, conducted by specialists Reinaldo Durán and Alexander Méndez at the Cayo Güín Base Business Unit.

This facility is unique in Cuba, producing both charcoal and activated carbon from wood and coconut shell. Authorities claim that domestic sales are minimal due to low demand, hence the focus on international markets. Activated carbon is in high demand globally, especially in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as for water and gas treatment. However, it appears that the national industry does not require this product.

Conversely, the Cuban populace desperately needs basic charcoal as a vital necessity due to the lack of gas and electricity. In many areas, a sack of charcoal exceeds 1,000 Cuban pesos—a prohibitive cost for families earning an average monthly salary of just over 4,000 CUP. This discrepancy has fueled public frustration, as citizens watch vital resources being shipped abroad while they struggle to secure basic needs.

The production unit, under the jurisdiction of the Coconut Oil Extractor, employs 14 young workers who have diversified into making coconut oil-based soaps. Nevertheless, their output falls short of satisfying the national demand for these products.

The lack of transparency regarding export destinations and the revenue generated from these activities exacerbates criticism, as Cubans grapple daily with securing essential living provisions. Meanwhile, the government's priorities seem increasingly misaligned with the needs of ordinary citizens, focusing on exports rather than addressing domestic shortages.
