Jan Carlos Núñez García, a young man from Havana, has set a new national record by running an astounding 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Guanabo to the famous resort town of Varadero. This incredible achievement was completed on March 29, as reported by the official press.

The 25-year-old ultramarathon runner, who works as a chef, embarked on his journey at 4:00 p.m. to ensure he arrived in time for the Sixth Edition of the Varadero Marathon, held the following day, March 30. "I wanted to do something monumental for the Varadero marathon. This idea had been brewing for a while, so one day I just got up and decided to go for it. I chose that route because of the scenic coastline. Honestly, the explanation is simple: I wanted to conquer the 160 kilometers. The distance was daunting, but I was determined to push my limits," he explained about his journey.

He admitted that the most challenging part of the marathon occurred near the city of Matanzas. The remaining 25 miles (40 kilometers) to Varadero were particularly grueling: "By then, my shoes were soaked, and fatigue was overwhelming. Frustration set in because I was surpassing the 100-kilometer mark, which felt like an endless wall."

His strategy to persevere was to break the distance down into manageable segments. The race was marked by both physical exertion and tears of exhaustion. "I ran many miles crying, not because I couldn't go on, but because it helped me release stress, which was beneficial," he shared.

After achieving this milestone, Núñez García aims to participate in international events and dreams of running across the entire island of Cuba: "I aspire to traverse the island from Cabo de San Antonio to Punta de Maisí. I believe this would prove I'm ready for something even bigger. It could be my ultimate training ground."

His training was supported by his teammate July Peláez Díaz and Olympic silver medalist Rodolfo Falcón, who assisted him in refining his technique.
