A 31-year-old man, who sustained severe injuries in a traffic accident last Tuesday in the Chambas municipality of Ciego de Ávila province, passed away this past Sunday. According to Cuban activist Guillermo Rodríguez Sánchez, who cited family sources, Elier Varela Torna succumbed to the extensive burns and injuries he had suffered.

Varela, a resident of Punta Alegre, had been hospitalized in an Avileño hospital since the accident occurred on April 17. He was reported to be in critical condition, suffering from second and third-degree burns. Calls for assistance were made on social media to gather medical supplies and materials necessary for his care and recovery. His family indicated that he urgently needed silver sulfadiazine cream, nitrofurazone, gauze, and gloves.

Guillermo Rodríguez, in his announcement of Varela's passing, expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the young man's care, stating, "Thank you to everyone who followed our updates, to those who donated gauze, ointment, and even sent money without being asked to help his loved ones with expenses."

This tragic incident has now claimed three lives from the severe traffic accident that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Chambas, Ciego de Ávila province. Both were residents of the coastal town of Punta Alegre, a community now deeply shaken by the tragedy.

In addition to the fatalities, five others were reported injured, including the recently deceased Varela. Elier Varela suffered burns and a cranial fracture; Eusebio Rey Boloy, 32, had multiple injuries; José Pérez Cardozo, 59, sustained minor injuries; Carlos Álvarez González, 58, also had minor injuries, and the truck driver required emergency surgery and was reported in critical condition.
