Two young men have been formally charged and placed in preventive detention for the murder of Cuban citizen José Aurelio Ramírez, which occurred on Sunday, April 13, in Melanie, East Coast Demerara, Guyana. The Guyanese police, through their official channels, identified the detainees as Tyrese Blair, also known as "Six," a 20-year-old unemployed resident of Lot 44 Middle Walk, Buxton, and Omar Clayton Bacchus, a 21-year-old construction worker residing at Lot 121 Paradise, both of African descent.

The suspects were apprehended on April 14 and formally charged with "murder in the course or furtherance of a robbery," under Section 100 (1)(c)(i) of the Criminal Law (Offenses) Act, Chapter 8:01. During a hearing held on Thursday, April 17, at the No. 1 Vigilance Magistrate's Court, presided over by Judge Sunil Scarce, the charges were read to them. The accused were not required to enter a plea and were subsequently remanded to prison. The case has been adjourned until May 22, 2025.

According to the police report, Ramírez and his partner, fellow Cuban citizen Yolenny Pérez Martínez, were returning home after having some beers at a local bar. Mohamed Ali, Pérez Martínez's employer and owner of a catering business in Melanie, told Guyanese media outlet Stabroek News that José Aurelio had picked her up from work on Saturday night, and the couple left around 9:00 p.m.

Pérez Martínez recounted that they decided to stop at one of the bars on Melanie Plaza Street, where they sat down for a few beers before heading home. It was during this journey that the robbery took place. According to Pérez Martínez's account to her boss, an unknown assailant snatched her purse, prompting her to instinctively chase after. She was unaware that her partner had been stabbed until she noticed his injuries.

"Everything happened so fast," she said. "I didn't understand how the robbery occurred; someone simply approached and took his belongings. At that moment, he probably tried to defend himself. That's when he was stabbed," she explained.

The thieves fled the scene, taking the young woman's purse, which contained an undisclosed amount of cash, her mobile phone, ID, and passport. Preliminary reports indicated that Ramírez sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest, ribs, and chin. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ramírez's body was transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where an autopsy was performed to determine the exact cause of death. The incident has shocked the Cuban community in Guyana as authorities continue their investigation to uncover more details about the crime.
