Nearly 250 Repressive Incidents Documented in Cuba During March 2025

Saturday, April 19, 2025 by Richard Morales

In March 2025, Cubalex documented around 247 human rights violations in Cuba, as highlighted in their latest report. The recently concluded month was described as having the "highest number of violence and citizen insecurity incidents recorded by the Cubalex monitoring team since it began this work over two years ago."

According to Cubalex, 103 violent incidents occurred across 50 municipalities throughout the provinces and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud. These incidents were reported through social media and independent press outlets.

The organization detailed a total of 496 repressive incidents, including arbitrary detentions (64), transfers to police or detention centers (55), threats or coercion (49), use of violence (46), violations of religious freedom (45), and abuses against incarcerated individuals (70).

The highest number of violations took place in Havana (53), Santiago de Cuba (48), and Matanzas (44), with the most affected municipalities being Santiago de Cuba (46), Santa Clara (18), and Perico (15).

A total of 167 individuals (68 women and 99 men) were victims of at least one violation during this period. Opposition leaders such as Berta Soler Fernández, José Daniel Ferrer García, Félix Navarro Rodríguez, and Ángel Juan Moya Acosta experienced the highest number of repressive events against them.

The Ladies in White organization, the Opposition Movement for a New Republic (MONR), the Cuban Patriotic Union (UNPACU), and Cuba Decide were among the most targeted groups.

Cubalex also reports ongoing complaints from prisons about inadequate nutrition, reduced food portions, and guards preventing inmates from storing food brought by their families. This dire situation has led to malnutrition and increased diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis among prisoners.

Among the affected is Loreto Hernández García, who faces severe health issues and has been denied proper medical care and parole. Political prisoner Lizandra Góngora has also been refused a transfer to a prison closer to her home province.

Another troubling case involved Cuban political prisoner Mayelín Rodríguez Prado, who, in March, was brutally assaulted at the Provincial Women's Prison in Camagüey. Accused of broadcasting the August 2022 protests in Nuevitas on social media, she is serving a 15-year sentence. Regime enforcers violently attacked her, dragging her to a cell after a severe beating.
