Spanish YouTubers Astonished by What Americans Discard as Trash

Monday, April 21, 2025 by Claire Jimenez

Spanish YouTubers Nuria Calvo and Sebastián Méndez have stunned their audience with a recent video showcasing the perfectly good items that people in the United States often throw away. From appliances to bicycles, the couple captured a treasure trove of discarded goods.

During their exploration of a neighborhood, Nuria and Sebastián discovered a surprising array of abandoned items: barbecue grills, children's toys, bicycles in excellent condition, car chains, vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, a fully operational refrigerator, an exercise walker, lawn mowers, and a multitude of household items.

Although some of these items were not in perfect working order, the YouTubers noted that this was the exception. Generally, the condition of the items was remarkably good. "I just don't understand why they throw away so many new things," Sebastián expressed in disbelief as he pointed out a treadmill that its owner assured him was fully functional.

The video sparked thousands of reactions, with many viewers recognizing similar occurrences in their own U.S. neighborhoods. Some noted that this phenomenon has decreased in recent years, while others agreed that leaving items on the street is intended for others to take, as evidenced in the YouTubers' video.

There are also those who commented that it's often more expensive to repair an item than to buy a new one, leading people to simply discard it.

Beyond entertainment, the couple's video prompted a reflection on consumerism, waste, and the lifespan of products in the United States.

Insights on Waste and Consumer Habits in the U.S.

Why do people in the U.S. throw away functional items?

Many items are discarded because it's often cheaper to replace them than to repair them, or because people upgrade to newer models.

What can be done to reduce waste?

Encouraging recycling, donation, and repair services can help reduce the amount of waste and extend the life of products.
