A Cuban woman proudly shared her life story on social media, recounting her journey to achieving the American Dream. Arriving in the United States 15 years ago without a dime, she now celebrates the stability she longed for. Her story was featured on the TikTok profile (@510famosotv), where she detailed how she came to America penniless, yet through hard work and faith, reached a level of stability she believes would have been unattainable in Cuba. "I arrived here 15 years ago, thanks to God and my father, who was a U.S. citizen and brought me over. My friend, I had zero dollars," she recounted.
When asked if America lived up to her expectations, she candidly replied, "I had somewhat broader expectations, but I soon realized the sacrifices required were greater. Nevertheless, I'm grateful to this great country for the opportunity it has given me."
Originally from the Cerro neighborhood in Havana, she emphasized the importance of faith in her journey: "Faith is what propels humans forward. Having faith in God is the greatest thing one can possess in this universe."
With emotion, she shared that she raised her son alone, provided him with a good education, and today he is a responsible man. "I didn't have the fortune of a partner, but I've achieved far more than I could have in Cuba. Today, I have stability, thanks to God," she proudly stated.
Asked what life would be like if she were still in Havana, she answered bluntly, "I would be tormented because there are so many economic hardships there, power outages, and a lack of hope. Here, I have faith and goals."
She also offered advice to new generations of migrants, particularly young women arriving in the U.S.: "Focus, choose a career that allows you to be self-sufficient, make your own money, and don't rely on anyone else."
Finally, she gave a message to those dreaming of becoming barbers or stylists in the U.S.: "Dive in fully, study, get your licenses, and learn something new every day. You will never regret being a barber."
Before saying goodbye, she reaffirmed what she misses most about Cuba: her family. Yet, she also cherishes what she values most today: the chance the United States has given her to start anew.
In recent months, TikTok user 510FamosoTV has captured the attention of thousands by interviewing people living in the U.S. to determine if they have achieved the so-called American Dream. Among the interviewees were four Cubans who chose to remain anonymous but shared a straightforward piece of advice for newly arrived youth: "Work hard."
