A resident of Sunrise in Broward County, Florida, has been taken into custody for the murder of his mother inside their apartment, according to local authorities. The arrest report, which was accessed by Local 10 News, reveals that 29-year-old Jorge Omar Torres was jailed on Saturday morning, facing charges of premeditated murder.

The Sunrise police department reported receiving a call last Friday about a shooting incident and a naked man running in and out of the back door of an apartment. Subsequently, law enforcement contacted Torres' brother, who expressed his belief that Torres had just shot their mother.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, officers noticed blood seeping from beneath the front door. Inside, they discovered the victim deceased on the floor. Torres was found naked in the backyard of a nearby apartment when officers arrived. In subsequent statements, Torres explained that he lived in the apartment with his mother, father, and brother.

On the day of the matricide, Torres had purchased eight grams of mushrooms in Davie before driving to Markham Park, where he consumed two grams of the substance along with smoking a marijuana cigarette. As he returned home, he began experiencing hallucinations. He reportedly asked his brother to "kill the cockroaches outside," and perceived his brother as both a lizard and a cockroach, according to the report.

Torres then retrieved a 9mm firearm from his room and pointed it at his brother, whom he perceived as a "bad guy." However, he decided against shooting him and returned the weapon to his room. Shortly after, Torres' mother arrived home, leading to an argument about his condition. Torres, who went to his room, exited through the window naked to "safeguard his dog."

It was during this time that his mother asked him to come inside. Once indoors, Torres, still hallucinating, believed his mother was the "bad one" and shot her in the chest until she collapsed.

Jorge Torres, whose nationality has not been disclosed, is currently held without bail at the Broward Main Jail. A similar crime made headlines two years prior when a Cuban teenager murdered his mother. Derek Rosa researched the most effective way to kill someone and then applied it to his mother, who had given birth to his sister just 14 days earlier. The young man confessed to the crime, explaining that he got out of bed, grabbed a purple-handled kitchen knife, and after committing the murder, sent a selfie to a friend before calling 911 on October 12, 2023, to confess.

Throughout the call, the operator repeatedly asked the minor why he killed his mother, but he did not provide an answer.
