Cuban TikTok User Stands Firm on Trips to Cuba: "As Long as My Mom Is There, I've Lost Plenty in Cuba"

Friday, November 29, 2024 by Alexander Flores

A Cuban woman known on TikTok as @yuli_la_prospera97 has fiercely defended her decision to visit Cuba in response to a comment questioning her travels. In a video shared on the platform, she emphasized that no one, not even the harshest critics, has the right to comment on her choices when it involves her mother. "Let me explain something to you, Enia: I'm going to Cuba as often as needed because I have residency for that, which perhaps you don't," she began in response to the remark.

She went on to explain that her mother is experiencing "tremendous hardship," and although she wishes to bring her out of the island, she cannot afford it because she is neither wealthy nor working currently due to caring for her son. The Cuban expressed her frustration with those who criticize others for traveling to Cuba, particularly when they have family there. "I don't care what you think or what this man thinks (referring to Otaola). I've lost plenty in Cuba because my mom is there, and as long as she stays, I will keep going," she stated firmly.

Challenging Attempts to Control Travel Choices

Moreover, she condemned those who, from her perspective, try to dictate who can travel or not. "Enough with telling people what they should do. We are free. Leave the communism in Cuba," she added. Her response not only resonated with her followers but also garnered support in the comments. Many users defended her stance and shared their own experiences, demonstrating that this issue remains a sensitive topic within the Cuban community.

Among the reactions were comments like: "I agree with you, as long as my mother and child are there, I'll go, and I don't care who likes it or not"; "Only those with family in Cuba know what we go through"; "That's very true, give love to your mom, it's the most important thing"; "Who the hell is anyone to question what one does? This is a free country," and "As long as I have family there, I'll go as many times as necessary, they can say whatever they want."

Community Reactions and Personal Stories

Some also expressed frustration with those who criticize from afar: "Those who give that kind of opinion don't have family in Cuba or don't care, it's that simple"; "I missed the last two years of my mother's life, I wish I had had the residency to see her" and "People are bold, what the hell do they care where someone goes?"

The video also reignited an ongoing debate among exiled Cubans about the decision to travel to the island and how it is perceived within the community. This topic continues to be a poignant issue, reflecting the complex dynamics faced by those with ties to Cuba.
