Cuban Migrant Shares Life in Mexico City During Journey to the U.S.

Sunday, May 26, 2024 by Christopher Ramirez

A Cuban migrant who has been documenting and sharing the harsh realities of emigrating to the United States posted a video this Saturday revealing the conditions of a cheap rental in Mexico City. "I've arrived at my luxurious home in Mexico City," wrote the young man, known as El Aldeanito Cubano, on Facebook, as he showcased his living situation.

The video also highlights the furniture and appliances the young man has, including a spacious bed, a refrigerator, a gas stove, a homemade water heater, pans and utensils, a sofa for guests, "with a little hole, but it's fine," he noted.

Additionally, the young man boasted about the view from his rented location, which offers a sweeping view of Mexico City. "What do you think?" he asked at the end of the video, where he did not disclose the rent price, although he mentioned that he chose the place because "it's very cheap."

The festive and ironic tone used by the young man in his post does not mask the hardships Cubans face during the perilous journey to the U.S. He has documented several risks faced by migrants, such as dangerous raft crossings and treacherous road trips, along with the hunger and harsh living conditions they endure.

Recently, another Cuban shared a video showing how migrants live in Uruguay, where up to 13 people rent a single guesthouse. The user, identified as El Soñador, posted a recording on TikTok depicting the common areas of a high-rise house where 13 unrelated people reside.
