Young individuals who arrived from Cuba two years ago are set to graduate from high school, thanks to the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, and will continue their studies at the Miami Dade Honors College.

Their names are Jennifer Uva, Lismarian Amalla, Daynier Delrisco, Aroldo Albo, Hyans Pascual, Marcel Manzor, and María González. Most of them are interested in pursuing careers in various branches of medicine. Only María González has chosen to study law.

Jennifer, who was born to Cuban parents in Italy, shared with Telemundo, "I left my parents on the other side of the world and came to this country to study. I have a grand goal."

Christina Grandal, a student program advisor, told the television network that these students were focused on their post-secondary education and how to secure scholarships as soon as they entered the school. This achievement fills them with pride, as Amalia expressed, "I feel very proud of myself. Coming from a country without speaking the language and starting over is very difficult."

In August, these students will begin the two-year rigorous program at the Miami Dade College Honors College. The requirements to enter this prestigious institution are not easy to meet, according to Magda Castineyra, the program's dean.

Challenges and Requirements of the Honors College

"You need to have a certain academic level coming out of high school, take the SAT or ACT, need letters of recommendation, write several essays, and have an interview with the Honors College before being accepted," Castineyra explained.

Following this opportunity, graduating students have better chances of entering high-level universities, including those considered Ivy League for their reputation of academic excellence, assured Castineyra.

The Miami Dade College also offers other scholarships and the advantage of enrolling in their regular programs at any time of the year.
