The governments of Cuba and Mexico are set to meet this Tuesday in Havana to tackle the ongoing irregular migration crisis towards the United States, an issue that has kept Latin America on edge.

High-Level Meeting on Migration

The XVI Meeting of the Working Group on Migration and Consular Affairs between the Republic of Cuba and the United Mexican States will be chaired by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío and the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, according to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The challenges posed by migration to the governments of the region are varied. Among them are calls to avoid dangerous routes, as well as measures taken by the U.S. administration regarding its southern border.

Recently, U.S. President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that they would adopt immediate measures to "significantly" reduce irregular migrant crossings at the border between the two countries.

"In the short term, the two leaders instructed their national security teams to work together to immediately implement concrete measures to significantly reduce irregular border crossings while protecting human rights," detailed a joint statement shared with the public.

Cuban Migratory Statistics

Regarding Cuban migration figures, more than 10,400 nationals from the island have been detained by Mexican authorities during the first quarter of the current year, according to numbers provided by the Migration Policy Unit of the Mexican Secretariat of the Interior.

With that figure, exactly 10,464, the Caribbean island ranks ninth among countries with the highest number of people detained in Mexican territory.

During a migration round between the Cuban and U.S. governments held on April 16 in Washington, the Cuban regime labeled the current migrant crisis as "the largest in Cuba's history," but blamed the U.S. government for the massive exodus that has driven hundreds of thousands of Cubans to leave the island.
