One deceased and four injured is the balance of a traffic accident occurred about 6:30 am this Thursday on the Central Highway, in the segment located between the recreational center La Playita and the hamlet El Cinco, about five kilometers from Jatibonico (Sancti Spíritus).

The incident has been made known by the journalist Oscar Salabarría Martínez, who has specified two vehicles collided, a cargo van and a modern car, while trying to avoid a piece that fell from a Kamaz truck that was circulating at that time around the place.

Of the four injured who are being treated in the Provincial General Hospital "Camilo Cienfuegos" two are reported seriously. Local authorities investigate the causes of the event.

In 2018, 330 traffic accidents occurred in the province of Sancti Spíritus, in which 27 people died, according to the Cuban News Agency (ACN). With respect to the previous year, 115 fewer accidents took place.

The excess of speed, the disrespect to the right of the road and the distractions of the drivers were the main reasons. However, the poor state of Cuban roads, constantly denounced on social networks by citizens, were not included by state specialists as causes of the accidents.

The most affected stretch of road in 2018 was the Central Highway between the cities of Sancti Spíritus and Cabaiguán, and between the town of Jatibonico and the limits with the province of Ciego de Ávila.

Nationally, in 2018, 683 people died in Cuba as a result of traffic accidents and 7730 were injured, in a total of 10,070 accidents.

According to data from the National Road Safety Commission published in Granma, 67 fewer people died on Cuban roads last year and the number of road incidents was reduced by 1,100 compared to 2017, when the Island reported 11,187 accidents (292 more than in 2016), with a balance of 750 dead and 7,999 injured.

Traffic accidents are the fifth cause of death in the country.
