Smithers-based production team shares award for music video

The Cuban-born artist (real name: Alexis Puentes) nabbed the award Thursday night at a ceremony held in Las Vegas.

Cuba won the honours for Best Short Form Music Video with his clip for Eres Tu, which shows him working in a steampunk-inspired setting. The video was produced by the Smithers-based team of Christian Bielz and Taylor Fox.

It’s a hat trick for Cuba after he garnered the title of Best New Artist in 2010, making his Latin Grammy the first-ever earned by a Canadian artist.

Last year, he shared a Latin Grammy win for co-writing Milly Quezada’s Toma Mi Vida. His co-writing credits also include working with Nelly Furtado on her Spanish album Mi Plan, and collaborating with some of Latin music’s biggest stars including Luis Enrique and Gusi.

“This Latin Grammy (for Eres Tu) is a very special one to me because it has the whole Smithers community behind it,” Cuba said in a press release.

Cuba was born and raised in Artemisa, Cuba. He moved to Canada in 1999 with his brother Adonis, first settling in Victoria. He moved to Smithers in 2003.

Cuba has released four solo albums to date: Humo De Tabaco (2004), Agua Del Pozo (2007), Alex Cuba (2009) and Static in the System (2012), which Eres Tu is from.

Humo De Tabaco and Agua Del Pozo have both earned Cuba Juno Awards for World Music Album of the Year.
