The body and boat of a 40-year-old former Fairbanksan who went missing while sailing alone in Florida a week and a half ago was found in Cuba.

Jay Rydberg was still tethered to his sailboat, a 39-foot trimaran, when it was found grounded east of Havana, his sister, Jill Lesseig, said on Tuesday. The boat was intact with its sails up when it was found, she said.

Rydberg left Fort Myers, Fla., on May 13 for an overnight trip to Key West in his trimaran, a sailboat with a hull and two outriggers. The U.S. Coast Guard received a distress radio signal from Rydberg's boat the next day about 30 miles north of Key West and began searching for him.

Lesseig said the Coast Guard called her Tuesday morning to inform the family that Rydberg's body and boat had been found. She didn't know exactly when he was found, how he ended up in the water or why he couldn't get back in the boat. Lesseig said she can only speculate it was "something catastrophic and medical."

The discovery of the boat and body provides the family with the closure they needed to move on, she said.

Rydberg, who grew up in Fairbanks, had lived in Key West for about a year.
