The company said it “scrupulously” complies with U.S. embargo laws and adheres to the “highest quality and safety standards” in its Cuban activities. In a meeting with U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in Spain this summer, Repsol officials said their Cuban offshore drilling operations will comply with U.S. safety standards, and that it would invite U.S. inspectors to visit the rig.

Responding to a letter from 34 U.S. Congresspeople saying that Repsol YPF will risk being sued in U.S. courts if it engages in offshore drilling in Cuba, the Spanish oil company stood firm.

“Repsol could run the risk to be subject, including its subsidiaries, to criminal and civil complaints in U.S. courts,” the letter to company President Antonio Brufau said. “We respectfully ask that Repsol abandon all oil drilling activities it has proposed in Cuban waters.

Earlier this year, Repsol delisted is American Depositary Receipts from the New York Stock Exchange.

The letter was an initiative mostly of anti-Castro representatives in Florida.
