Cubans and Puerto Ricans have been forced into an artificial separation by the U.S. blockade, even though charter flights are now traveling between the two countries. The first commercial flight between Puerto Rico and Cuba recently re-opened a path blocked by the boycott imposed by Washington on Havana.

Unfortunately for Cubans and Puerto Ricans, planes cannot be accessed by all those wishing to travel to Cuba as tourists.

Organizers of the new air route explained that permission to travel to Cuba will be based on individual cases and eventually only Cubans living in Puerto Rico will receive authorization.

The source added that with the consent of the US Treasury Department, some religious, academics, athletes and artists could travel to Cuba. Puerto Rico as a colony is obliged to submit to the demands of the economic embargo, which among other absurd laws prohibits Puerto Ricans and Americans to freely travel to the Caribbean nation. So Cuba and Puerto Rico…the two

wings of one bird…” as poet Lola Rodriguez wrote in 1893, remain without the open approach that is normal among other countries for trade, tourism, economic or other ties.

That does not mean that the unreasonable provisions issued by Washington would curtail the existing historic ties between the two peoples.

National Hero Jose Marti was offended by the fate of Puerto Rico, and always spoke of achieving the independence of Cuba and to encourage and assist that of the Puerto Ricans. Such was the mutual identification through the years. Cuban and Puerto Rican patriots have naturally evoked the landmarks and historical places of each other.

Cuba favourably recognizes, among many other beloved artists, the figure of singer Danny Rivera, who like many other Puerto Ricans sings the lyrics of Cuban troubadours. But it is not possible yet to increase cultural exchanges or others between ordinary people of both countries. Spokesmen for the organizers of the first flight from San Juanto eastern Santiago de Cuba insisted that all flights to the Caribbean Island are covered by federal regulation of the northern power.

This ordinance is bordering on the fanatic and tries to isolate Cuba from the international arena, especially in their natural environment, the Caribbean and Latin America. / Radio Havana Cuba
