Underlining the increasing economic interest among Middle Eastern nations in Cuba, Saudi Arabia officially opened an embassy in Havana.

The kingdom celebrated the opening with a reception in the Hotel Nacional, attended by Cuban and Saudi officials as well as the ambassadors of “friendly nations, Arab and Muslim,” according to a communique of the Cuban foreign ministry.

Chargé d’affaires Hassan bin Said Al-Jomae said in a speech that the opening is an expression of the will on both sides to raise the level of relations to the “highest in all areas,” and that Cuba is playing an important role in Arab and other global issues.

Saudi Arabia has directly provided aid for hospital construction and indirectly, via OPEC, for irrigation projects.
