Later Saturday, Russia played Cuba and Spain took on China. The United States, winner of the past two world titles, will play the Russia-Cuba winner in the quarterfinals while Canada will take on the winner of Spain-China.

Spain, Greece, the United States and Canada received byes in the opening playoff round because they won their round-robin groups.
