With this award, in the Grand Cross category, his virtues as a professor and his performance as Havana City Historian and Dean of Old Havana’s San Geronimo University College stand out, the Cubadebate Web site reported.

In this way, Leal joined the prestigious list of illustrious personalities who have received this honor, granted in Spain since 1902.

The Civil Order of Alfonso X “The Wise” was also given on Friday to Russian Professor Marina Grigorievna Polisar and to three organizations also committed to education. These institutions were the Tomillo Foundation, devoted to social improvement and to the development of programs like Social Intervention, destined to adolescents who leave the educational system; the Foundation for Aid against Drug Addiction; and the Association of Historic Institutes of Spain.(ACN)
