Cuba Changes Manager before World Baseball Challenge in Canada

2011.07.05 - 11:25:26 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. HAVANA, CUBA.-  Eduardo Martin will be Cuba’s new manager to the World Baseball Challenge tournament to be held in the Canadian city of Prince George on July 8-17, replacing Alfonso Urquiola who was hospitalized due to a sudden illness.

The announcement was made by Higinio Velez, national commissioner of the sport at a press conference on Monday night. Velez said that Urquiola was taken to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana city, and though the first tests results are not yet available, he will have to rest.

Urquiola is still the Cuban manager for the coming World Cup and the Guadalajara Pan American Games in October.

Velez said Martin was appointed acknowledging his work as manager of the national team in the University World Championship and the Intercontinental Cup held last year, as well as the Pan American qualifier in Puerto Rico.

The Cuban team will be made up of the following players:

Catchers: Ariel Pestano (VCL) and Yordanis Alarcón (LTU); Infielders: José Dariel Abreu (CFG), Alexander Malleta (IND), Héctor Olivera (SCU), Yorbis Borroto (CAV), Alexander Ayala (CMG), Rudy Reyes (IND) and Yulieski Gourriel (SSP); Outfielders: Alfredo Despaigne (GRA), Frederich Cepeda (SSP), Giorvis Duvergel (GTM), Serguei Pérez (IND) and Yoelvis Leyva (CFG);Pitchers: Norge Luis Vera (SCU), Vicyohandri Odelín (CMG), Miguel Alfredo González (HAB), Vladimir García (CAV), Norberto
González (CFG), Jonder Martínez (HAB), Julio Alfredo Martínez (PRI), Danny Betancourt (SCU), Robelio Carrillo (VCL) and Alberto Soto (GRA).

Also Velez reported that outfielder Yoenis Céspedes has not attended the trainings and his whereabouts are unknown.
