Agencies. Havana.02-07-2011 - 9:17 pm.George McGovern, Former Democrat Senator for South Dakota, is on a visit to the island.

Former Democrat presidential candidate of the USA, George McGovern praised this Saturday Cuba's education and health systems and said he asked for an interview with Fidel Castro to congratulate him for these achievements, Telam Agency reported.

George McGovern, 89 years old, one of the North American politicians who have mostly critcized Washington's policy towards Cuba, is on a visit to Havana.

"I have asked to meet former president Fidel Castro though I have not received a confirmation yet that he will receive me"

Mcgovern said according to ANSA. He advanced he wants to personally congratulate the former governor for his achievements on education and health spheres.

Former South Dakota Senator (1963-1981) visits the Cuban Chancellery this Saturday and will stay on the island until Monday.

McGovern, who has been in Havana in several occassions, was special assistant for president John F. Kennedy and a Director of Food for Peace Program  between 1961 and 1962.

During Bill Clinton’s government, Mcgovern was USA ambassador to the UNO for Agriculture and Food Organization with a Rome venue.

He was candidate for the USA presidency in 1972 and was defeated by Richard Nixon.
