06/29/2011. On the comming year 2012, on the hundredth anniversary of the important Cuban playwright, poet, novelist and essay writer Virgilio Piñera, Cuban readers will be able to enjoy editions and re-editions of his literary fund.

The literary legacy of Virgilio Piñera will circulate profusely in Cuba on the comming 2012, a year maked by the hundredth anniversary of his birth. The medular work will irradiate from different editorial labels. His work has a high aesthetic flight, such as his Teatro completo, innovative, advanced for his time, as may be seen in Electra Garrigó, that anticipates an absurd that is atributed to Ionesco, even though La soprano calva was published and represented much later.

The writing of Electra… dates back to 1941 and its stage debut took place in 1948. Ionesco writes La soprano… in 1950, like an exercise to learn English. In 1964 it is published for the first time by the French editorial house Gallimard.

Piñera set a stage in Cuban theater, in which stands out with its own light Aire frío, Dos viejos pánicos and above everything else, Electra Garrigó, in which classical aura of the Greek tragedies is present together with a deformation towards grotesque aspects.

Harmony, a sustantial clasical assumption, lives together with the break up of that harmanic equilibrium and adding elements of Cuban folk to the Greek myth. The gods from the Olympus become a serenade characters.

The label Tablas Alarcos will give birth to a critical edition of that deeply original and complex theater.

Piñera, who has entered into a diversity of genres: poetry, play writing, essay, novel, shows a trajectory that is covered by a permanent inconformity, which instead of lastrating him, acted as a boosting motor of his creative energy.

A sort of “denial aesthetics”, such as the one defined by the criti Rine Leal, as illuminating.

Cuban readers will be holding therefore in the comming editions and re-editions of his literary arsenal, a map to investigate his contributions and densitites, his never ending search for new ways.

According to the Commision that is organizing the festivities, presided over by the National Literature Award, Antón Arrufat, the program is huge and it incluyes exhibitions, colloquiums, conferences, academia courses, staging, documentaries and some more surprises that are still being planed.

Accoding to the written letter, the editorial from the Unión de Escritores y Artistas (Union of Writers and Artists) is aiming for five titles, among them Orbita de Virgilio Piñera and Virgilio Piñera en persona by Carlos Espinosa; La isla en peso with all of his poetry together; the novel La carne de René and a volume that bring together all of his letters.

The Virgilian year will be especially important during the 2012 International Book Festival in Cuba, when his books will circulate together for the enjoyment of the readers.

People agree that by celebrating this tribute Cuban culture is paying of one of its greatest debts with one of its most outstanding authors.
