The former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is to arrive today in Cuba to meet the island’s mandate Raul Castro in a tour that will also include a visit to Chavez’ Venezuela. According to the Cuban official newspaper Granma, Lula will hold “a work meeting” with Raúl Castro and will visit “sites of economic interest.”

Nonetheless, the paper didn’t precise when the meeting with the Cuba’s mandate will take place or the amount of days that the Brazilian former president will remain on the island.

According to sources in Brasilia, Lula will fly in from a previous Bahamas trip and, after two days in Cuba, he is scheduled to leave for Venezuela where he will meet Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez on Friday.

This is his first trip to Cuba after leaving power five months ago. Lula is expected to visit construction sites at the Mariel port, 50km west of Havana. The port restructuring is subsided with a US$ 300 million credit line awarded on Lula’s term.

After the remodeling, Mariel is to become the most important port of the Island, replacing Havana Port.

So far, Lula’s international tour has taken him to Nicaragua, Panamá and Bahamas.
