HAVANA, Cuba, (acn) Omara Portuondo, the Queen of Feeling, will perform on Saturday,November 6, at the GW Lisner Auditorium of Washington DC, one of the most important stages of the US capital.

The announcement, made by that US institution, points out that this “living legend of Cuba has shared her style of interpreting jazz and ballads with some of the most important and loved Cuban orchestras, and achieved international fame with the Buenavista Social Club.”

The Cuban diva of the Buena Vista Social Club won the Latin Grammy with her album Gracias, which she considers a special gift for being a selection of the most significant pieces of her artistic career, the www.cubadebate.cu Web site reported.

Various US publications have echoed the upcoming performance by Omara, enhancing their prestige by announcing it on their pages. The Washington Post pointed out: “The strengths of Portuondo are Cuban classic songs and elegant boleros, obsessed with love, memories and loneliness. It’s hardly surprising that she’s compared to stylists of great emotional value, like Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday and Judy Garland.”

Likewise, the Los Angeles Times described her as “The Queen of Caribbean vocalists.” The Diva has made incursions into cinema with her music, and this year interpreted “The Princess and the frog” (Tiana y el sapo), a Spanish version of one of the characters of Walt Disney’s most recent box-office hit.

In the animated film, the Cuban singer plays Mama Odie, a good and blind sorceress that lives in the swamps of Louisiana. The first volume of her biography, entitled “Omara, the angels also sing,” by Oscar Oramas, was presented this year to the public, critics and music lovers by National Literature Prize winner Pablo Armando Fernandez. Once more, Omara will shine like the star she is, illuminating everything and everybody around her with her beautiful melodies.
