HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 1 (acn) Foreign ministers of the South American Nations (UNASUR) will travel on Friday to Ecuador to express their support of president Rafael Correa who faced on Thursday a coup d’état attempt by police forces.

Heads of state and government representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela agreed to visit Ecuador after holding an emergency meeting at the organization’s headquarters in Buenos Aires.

The visit of the foreign ministers will serve to support both Correa and the Ecuadorian people who played a major role in the reestablishment of the institutional democracy in the country, as stated in the declaration passed in the meeting.

UNASUR representatives agreed that those responsible for the coup attempt must be judged and expressed in the declaration that any other challenges to institutional authorities nor coups d’état to legally elected civil powers will be no longer accepted, says a Prensa Latina report.

The document warns that in case of other similar events, the borders will be immediately closed and trade, air traffic, and energy supply and other services will be immediately suspended.

“We can rejoice to the fact that President Rafael Correa has been released (he was smuggled out of the hospital where he was trapped for 12 hours) and that he is in good health conditions,” said Argentina’s President Cristina Fernandez upon welcoming her counterparts at the San Martin Palace.

Meanwhile, Correa’s supporters, protected by military troops in battledress, continue to gather outside the government building to reiterate their support of their president, according to international media outlets.
