HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 10 (acn) Cuba warned on Wednesday that the HIV-AIDS pandemic is growing at an impressive pace while goals and worldwide plans to fight this scourge are not observed or complied with.

Speaking during a session of the United Nations General Assembly dedicated to the implementation of two declarations approved by the assembly on this issue, the Cuban Permanent Representative before the UN, Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, said the number of people living with AIDS increased from eight million in 1990 to almost 33 million today.

He added that the levels of AIDS infection and mortality are very high and noted that HIV continues to be the most lethal infectious disease of all and the main cause of death among women of reproductive age.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Cuban diplomat pointed out that the situation is worse today due to the current world economic and financial crisis and stated that, in order to guarantee universal prevention and treatment of HIV-AIDS, annual investments of $25 billion —40 percent more than in 2008— are needed.

In this respect, he said that Cuba guarantees free access to health services to its entire population, which, along with a national program of prevention and control, has allowed the country to have one of the lowest rates of HIV-AIDS in the world.
