HAVANA, Cuba, May 4 (acn) Cuba will send a medical brigade to Sierra Leone as a part of recently signed cooperation program funded by the government of South Africa.

South African International Relations and Cooperation minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, and Sierra Leone's Foreign Affairs minister Zainab Bangura, signed a memorandum of Understanding through which South Africa committed to provide three million US dollars over a three year period for the deployment of a Cuban medical brigade in Sierra Leone.

According to the Cuban embassy to South Africa, Sierra Leone's foreign minister said the signing of the document is a long-awaited culmination of a process that started three years ago. She said the South-South  project comes as much needed support because of the dramatic shortage of skilled medical personnel in her country.

The minister added that on last week of April her government announced the immediate implementation of a program providing free medical care to pregnant women, those who have just given birth and children under five, with the support of Cuban doctors."
